Adrienne Adams, 1906-2002, spent her childhood in Oklahoma, then in 1929, moved to New York to attend the American School of Design. She established herself as a free-lance designer of displays, murals, textiles and greetings cards. Then, in 1935, she married John L. Anderson, a children book writer, and in 1942 she illustrated his book, Bag of Smoke, beginning her career as a childrns illustrator. Adams has illustrated over 30 books including Hans Christian Anderson, the Brother Grimms, as well as contemporary American tales. Her full color images use tempera, gouache, watercolor or crayon to create enchanting illustrations.
Adams was runner-up for the Caldecott Medal in 1960 for Houses from the Sun, and again in 1962 for The Day We Saw the Sun Come Up. In 1973 she received the Rutgers Award for overall contributions to children’s literature.
