Albertus Seba was a wealthy Dutch merchant and apothecary who assembled a notable collection of specimens from the natural world during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He collaberated with many prominent scientists of the day to create accompanying text for the copper plate engravings, created by artists he recruited to accurately illustrate his "cabinet of curiosities." The work, \i Thesaurus \ was published between 1734 and 1765 in four volumes. It was initially produced in black and white then later hand-colored, as many of the specimens could not be distinguished without color.
