Bertha Corbett, an accomplished artist and miniature portrait painter, was born in Denver, studied in Minneapolis. Chicago and Philadelphia where she spent a year as a pupil of Howard Pyle. In a discussion with fellow artists she asserted that it was not necessary to see a face to make a figure expressive. Put to the challenge of proving her point, the Sunbonner Baby was born. Sunbonnet babies are active, expressive children whose faces are obscured by the brim of a large hat. They appeared in their first book, the Sunbonnet Babies in 1900, with accompanying rhymes and were discovered by Eulalie Osgood Grover who then employed Corbet to illustrate a number of children's primers in the early 1900's. Miss Corbet married Mr. Melcher and they moved west to southern California where she continued her work.
