Christophe Plantin began as a bookbinder in Antwerp in 1549. By 1555 he was producting and publishing books, and his publishing house continued to function until 1867 and is now preserved as a museum. Plantin was the leading printer of the second half of the 16th century, and his books are admired for their accuracy and their typography. His equipment included types designed by Garamond and Granjon. The central detail in his book mark is a pair of compasses.
