Daniel Carter Beard was a popular America illustrator and naturalist of the early 20th century. Born in Cincinatti, Beard studied art in New York, going on to illustrate many books including Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court". He was also an art teacher, focusing on animal drawings. One of the founders of the Boys Scouts of America, he was known to boys all over the country as Uncle Dan.
