Elizabeth Gordon was one of the best-loved childrens illustrators working in America in the early twentieth century. She was one of a handful of wonderful artists at this time associated with Volland House, a landmark in American publishing.
During the 1910s and 1920s, most American children’s books attempted to imitate the better French and German publishing. Volland, however, was doing something decidedly new in form and content. Not only did Volland publish American stories, but its books featured unique original illustrations with Art Deco influences. The printing is beautiful with elegant typefaces, heavy-coated pages, and color-block style illustrations with delicate engraved lines.
