Some confusion is caused by the maps of Robert de Vaugondy, because he is also known as Sieur Robert or Monsieur Robert or simply as Vaugondy. He published exceptionally fine folio maps of all parts of the world. His Univeral Atlas was first published in 1757 and was re-issued up until 1799. Vaugondy’s work is typical of the mid-eighteenth century French map-makers. It is less flamboyant than the earlier Dutch map-making style. His work tends to be delicately engraved and to have elaborate cartouches.
