| BIOGRAPHY OF HANS HOLBEIN, THE YOUNGER |
 |

Hans Holbein, the younger, was born in Basle in 1497. He studied with his father and Hans Burgkmair and became a skilled engraver and painter. Known for his portrait and religious paintings, Holbein was the outstanding artist of the German Renaissance. Holbein was equally skilled as an illustrator. He made hundreds of woodcuts illustrating Erasmus’ IN PRAISE OF FOLLY, THE DANCE OF DEATH , OLD TESTAMENT STORIES and the LUTHER BIBLE in the early 16th century. In 1526, because of a severe depression and religious disturbances, he left for England, where he supported himself with a series of portraits of important and famous people, recouping his fortunes. Holbein died in 1543, at the age of 46, a victim of the plague.
