Henry Alken is famous for his exceptionally fine hand colored aquaints of British sports. He sometimes works under the name Ben Tally Ho.
Alken illustrated Charles James Apperty’s Life of a Sportsman which was published in London in 1842 under the pseudonym of Nimrod, a biblical name meaning hunter. Designed for the aristocratic athlete, the volume included thirty-six aquaints depicting scenes of fox hunting, award ceremonies, and a person practicing carriage racing using reins attached to two overturned chairs.
