Flitcroft, protege of society architect Lord Burlington, was part of the circle of eighteenth century neo-Palladian English architects who were fascinated by the work of Palladio and his devoted follower, Inigo Jones. Inigo Jones, who was born in 1573 and died in 1651, was called "the English Palladio." Flitcroft, who had apprenticed originally as a draughtsman, was engaged by William Kent to draw and engrave the designs of Inigo Jones (coupled with a few of Palladio's designs). The volume William Kent published in 1727, The Designs of Inigo Jones: Plans & Elevations for Public & Private Buildings, was one of the first for this famous architect.
