| BIOGRAPHY OF JOHANN CHRISTOPH VOLCKAMER |
 |

Volckamer, a publisher at Nuremberg, is responsible for one of the earliest depictions of citrus fruits. From their introduction into Europe citrus were the province of royalty and the aristocracy, grown in greenhouses and orangeries during the winter and moved outside during the summer. IN nurnbergsch Hesperides (1708-1714)Volckamer docimented the fruit and blossoms of each of the citrus varieties- oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, whole and cut open, all of them richly hanging in the sky over landscapes, palazzos and country houses, orchards and gardens. A ribbon floating through the image bears the name of each fruit.
