| BIOGRAPHY OF JOSEPH MARTIN KRONHEIM |
 |

J. M. Kronheim was born and raised in Germany, but left for the British Isles in 1842 because of religious intolerance. A printer and lithographer by trade, he was also well known for his criticism and commentary on society, religion and art, Kronheim obtained a patent to use the innovative printing processes of George Baxter. His output of graphics in the mid nineteenth century was prodigious but his work was consistently of high quality. Using oil based colors, Kronheim refined Baxter's process, substituting zinc plates for the original wood blocks. His subject matter covered the whole gamut of victorianiana- royalty, religion, landscapes, women and children, history, current events
and the performing arts. At the end of his lifetime Kronheim returned to Germany, where he lost all his assets and died in poverty.
