Louis Fuertes, an American artist and naturalist, rose to prominence in the 1920s. His paintings of birds appear in most of the leading American orinthological works published in the latter half of his lifetime. He is also known for his murals and for his habitat groups at the American Museum of Natural History. With W. H. Osgood he made a scientific expedition to Ethiopia (1926-27) later jointly published under the title Artist and Naturalist in Ethiopia in 1939. Fuertes was accidently killed a few months after his return.
