Flore des Serres et Des Jardins de l'Europe was issued in twenty three volumes with approximately 2480 colored lithographed plates. The work for this massive botanical book was done by Charles Lemaire, M. Scheidweiler and Louis Van Houtte between 1845 and 1888. The images depicted were that of common plants, as wells as orchids, palms, and other exotic plants. These plants would have been found in Establishment Louis Van Houtte which was the largest nursery of its time on the European continent. The work ceased with the death of Van Houtte, a nurseryman who was sole editor of the last eight volumes.
