Michael Wolgemuth, or Wolgemut, was a German painter, wood carver, and engraver. He directed a flourishing wrokshop in Nuremberg with many assistants, including Albrecht Durer. He is peprhaps best know for his work as feistschrift on the Nuremberg Chronicle. Published in 1493 in the city of Nremberg, the Chronicle attempted to portray history from thebeginning ot the Old Testament right up to mpodern times. As feistschrift he was responsiblefor the placement of the woodcut illustrations and the indifidual letters of the text and it is for the beauty of these compositions that he is best known. The Chronicle is one or the earliest and most important illustrated volumes in the history of the printed book
