Owen Jones had a variety of careers, among them architect, designer, and topographer. He was of Welsh decent and was born on Thames Street, London on the 15th of February 1809. For six years, he was a pupil of Lewis Vulliamy, the architect, and attended the Royal Academy Schools. Jones made extensive visits to France, Italy, Egypt and Spain. His first work was PLANS, ELEVATIONS,SECTIONS AND DETAILS OF THE ALHAMBRA (a study of Hispanic-Moorish architecture) published in 1845. In 1851 he supervised the decorations for the Great Exposition and again in 1852 for the Crystal Palace at Sydenham. His greatest influence, however, was his GRAMMAR OF ORNAMENT (a study of ornamental devices from all nations) published in 1856.
