Matthioli, an Italian physician, first published Opera Quae Extant Omnia, hoc est
Commentarii in VI libros Pedacii Dioscorides anazarbei de Medicamateria in 1544
without illustrations. This was an extremely popular work and subsequently
appeared in many illustrated editions in a number of languages, including Latin and
German. The first edition to contain illustrations was an edited and enlarged one
done by the botanist Caspar Bauhin. This edition was published in 1565 in Venice
and contains the works by the artists Giorgio Liberate and Wolfgang Meyeerpeck.
A later German edition followed in 1586 by Joachim Camerarius.
