Robert Morden was an important cartographer of the late 17th century, producing engraved maps for Gibson’s 1695 revised edition of William Camden's Britannia. While he did several maps of the British Isles in their entirety, Morden is perhaps best known for his English county maps (which at the time included the counties of Ireland and Wales). The information presented was the best available at the time and included roads, towns, forests, lakes, and other topographic landmarks. His maps are exceptional in their excellent detail and attractive cartouches. Also of note is Morden's measurement of longitude based on a prime meridian through St. Paul's Cathedral in London, customarily shown in minutes at the top of his maps and degrees at the bottom.
