Edwards was one of William Curtis' original proteges, and worked for Curtis for
twenty-seven years on The Botanical Magazine. In 1815, as the result of a
misunderstanding, Edwards broke away and started the rival Botanical Register. There
were thirty-three volumes containing 2719 hand colored engraved plates issued between
1815 and 1847.
