Vignola, one of the foremost Renaisssance architects, came to Rome from Bologna as a pupil of Michaelangelo. After Michaelangelo's death he became the papal architect, completing the work on St. Peter's. In addition, he designed residences for high society and religious orders through out the city as Rome began its urban development in the sixteenth century. Aside from his buildings, his most important contribution was Regole della Cinque Ordini dArchitettura, based on the earlier work of Vitruvius. The Five Orders of Architecture gave minute rules for proportion in architecture and, as it was translated into various languages, continued in publication into the eighteenth century. It established ignola's place along with Palladio & Serlio as the leading figures in the architecture of the Italian Renaissance.
