An strongly American artist, he is particularly known for his depictions of sporting events. Harper's Weekly featured stories, news, and gossip among other things, but it was most widely know for its diverse and richly illustrated wood-engravings. Rogers was a part of this tradition, helping to inform and entertain readers in an era without television, radio, or photographs.
