| BIOGRAPHY OF TSUNODA KUNISADA |
 |

Tsunoda Kunisada, known simply as Kunisada, was a Japanese ukiyo-e painter and printmaker. Born in Musashi, he lived in Edo, and at age 15 was pupil of Toyokuni. In 1807 he produced he first book of illustrations and in 1808 began making actor prints. After his father's death, he took the name Gototei, and again in 1833 to Kochoro, and again in 1844 to Tokoyuni III, by which he is frequently known. In 1845 he retired under the name Shozo. His name changes mostly correspond to the school of art he was studying at the time. His early prints are his best. His art grew coarse, over colored and badly printed due to his obedience to 19th-century popular taste.
See Toyokuni III for more.
