Victor Levasseur was a French geographer whose works include the Atlas National Illustre (1838), the Atlas Universel Illustre (1840), and the Planisphere (1845). Perhaps the best known of these is the Atlas National, which illustrates each French department as well as the French colonies in America, Africa, and Asia.
While the charts are accurate and fairly detailed, Levasseur's plates are appreciated more for the elaborate borders which surround and embellish each map. These include illustrations characteristic of the region depicted as well as historical data and statistics.
