| BIOGRAPHY OF WENZEL HOLLAR |
 |

Wenzel or Wenceslaus Hollar was born in the Czech Republic to become a Bohemian etcher. After working in Strausbourg and Cologne, Germany, he accompanied Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, to England (1637), where he worked for Charles I. Despite his distinguished patrons and extraordinary ability and industry, he was often in want and died in poverty. Hollar produced some 2,740 plates of great variety, including portraits, landscapes, religious compositions, still life, ships, and architectural studies. Such collections as his Theatrum Mulierum are interesting documents on the costumes of the period. Other famous works include Nieuhoff's Batavian Expedition,Views of various parts of England, portraits, and illustrations for John Ogilby's editions of Vergil and Homer.
