Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was born in Massachusetts. As a young man, he studied lithography as an apprentice in Boston. He then moved to New York City to begin working as an illustrator. During the Civil War, Harper’s Weekly commissioned Homer to witness and depict important battles. Homer traveled the American South and then spent time in England. At the end of his life, he returned to New England. Here he created dramatic seascapes that are counted among his most famous and beautiful works.
