Nathaniel Currier established his lithography firm at One Wall Street in 1834. The print which garnered him immediate local attention was The Ruins of the Merchants Exchange, issued four days after the great fire of December 16th and 17th, 1835. In 1852 Currier engaged as bookkeeper James Merritt Ives, who evidenced such a shrewd insight into the public taste, combined with business acumen and an eye for technical perfection, that Currier made him a partner in 1857. The now familiar firm of Currier & Ives prospered until the deaths of Nathaniel Currier in 1888 and Ives seven years later.
