James David Similie, son of well-known engraver and Scottish immigrant James Similie, was an American landscape painter, etcher, and engraver. Born in New York City, he first took to engraving landscapes. Later he would develop his ability as a painter in both water color and oil. In the various methods of engraving he showed unusual skill. He was active in founding the American Water Color Society and the New York Etching Club, and he was made a member of the National Academy in 1882. His lively landscapes, modern in manner, are represented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the Corcoran Gallery.
