BIOGRAPHY OF YOSHITORA

BIOGRAPHY OF YOSHITORA

Yoshitora was a Japanese, Ukiyo-e style, printmaker whose work flourished between 1850 and 1880. He was born and worked in Edo, Japan, where he was the pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Yoshitora is most famous for Yokohama prints which depict foreigners and their technological inventions, although many of his prints contain conventional subjects such as historical scenes, Japanese legends, and views of Tokyo. Many of his designs were based on images he saw in foreign newspapers and books. He signed his prints with multiple aliases - Ichimosai, Kinchoroh or Mosai. In 1880, Yoshitora stopped producing prints. It is unknown if he had died or merely retired at this point.
