Among the greatest of those 17th century Dutch artists who turned their attention to floral illustration was Crispijn van De Passe. Born in Cologne in 1589, Crispijn was part of a celebrated family of Dutch engravers and the pupil of his artist-engraver father. Van de Passe’s Hortus Floridus was one of the most celebrated and often imitated of the early florilegia.
