Captain Cook's third voyage was the result of a commission to chart the Pacific Islands and explore the Northern coasts of Asia & America.
On this trip he discovered the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii). He explored & charted the Russian, Canadian, & Alaskan coasts in an unsuccessful effort to find a passage throug the Behring Straits that would lead him back to Europe. He returned to Hawaii where he was killed in a native uprising.
