Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1617) was a Dutch-born engraver and painter. Despite a hand deformity, he began to develop artistic skill under the attention of his father, a glass painter. Goltzius moved on to study engraving and became a successful printmaker. In 1590, he traveled to Italy to study classicism. Here he was inspired to turn away from mannerism and evolve a more normative style. After producing more than 500 engravings, Goltzius turned to painting. He produced only 50 paintings before his death. Goltzius is considered one of the most successful Dutch artists of his time.
